activeReader |
activeReader is an experience in digital poetry spurred by Bruce Andrews' article "Electronic Poetics" found in the the Cybertext Yearbook (2003). In that essay, Andrews advocated the obliteration of the author in favor of the fully engaged reader/user/creator of poetry. Attempting to mesh his message with an actual digital poetic environment, I made activeReader. activeReader consists of four "screens" of simultaneous action; it provides an area in which the writer can construct a poem using the language Andrews employs in his essay, an area where the user can control the animation and sound elements on the page, a chance for the reader to collaborate with the computer to rewrite a quote from the essay, and finally a space in which users can add their own text to the screen.
